  • Workshop on State-building: "Rebuilding post conflict societies: lessons from a decade of global experience"

The World Bank and the UNDP jointly organized a workshop on “Rebuilding Post-Conflict Societies: Lessons from a Decade of Experience†from September 19 to 21 in New York. The workshop convened a group of reformers and policy-makers from post-conflict situations in Africa, Central America, Eastern Europe, Central Asia, and the Pacific. A  Background Paper developed by Dr. Ashraf Ghani (Chancellor of Kabul University and former Minister of Finance of Afghanistan), Clare Lockhart and Michael Carnahan was presented by Dr. Ghani at the workshop and has subsequently been revised. Participants discussed the emerging policy agenda in a range of areas, with particular emphasis on prioritizing state functions in post-conflict settings, the consequences of conflict for state formation, the importance of national leadership and national capacities during transition and the controversial role of international support in post-conflict settings.

The joint World Bank/UNDP  Workshop Report synthesizes the content of the three-day workshop
