The Nile Basin Initiative, launched in February 1999, is a regional partnership of Nile basin countries united for the long-term development and management of Nile waters. For the first time in history, all ten Nile basin countries—Burundi, Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), Egypt, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Kenya, Rwanda, Sudan, Tanzania and Uganda—are working together to fight poverty. The initiative is developing a basin-wide framework, which is guided by the countries’ shared vision "to achieve sustainable socio-economic development through the equitable utilization of, and benefit from, the common Nile Basin water resources."
The NBI is comprised of a Council of Ministers of Water Affairs of the Nile Basin (Nile-COM), Technical Advisory Committee (Nile-TAC), and a Secretariat (Nile-SEC) located in Entebbe, Uganda.
