Country Director Discusses World Bank Activities in Nigeria

Abuja, Nigeria, July 22, 2008 – In an interview July 16 with This Morning on ITV, World Bank Country Director for Nigeria Onno Ruhl told listeners that the Bank’s main priority in Nigeria was to ensure that Bank-assisted projects worth $3.4 billion in the country delivered real results for Nigerians.

Mr. Ruhl spoke on a wide range of issues focused on the World Bank’s activities in Nigeria.  He said the Bank would work with Nigeria to support its 7-point agenda and Vision 2020 as well as would help the Government deliver tangible results through public spending in key areas such as social services and infrastructure.

Ruhl observed that Nigeria is already dominating Africa in non-oil sectors such as Telecommunications, Banking, and Entertainment, key drivers for the realization of Vision 2020.

He expressed willingness to partner with stakeholders in the development of these sectors as strong sources of growth, income generation and youth employment.

When the ITV interviewer expressed surprise that Ruhl mentioned the entertainment industry, he said: “I watch Africa Magic.  It is a great product.”
