The challenge

World leaders will be gathering next month to discuss the replenishment of the International Development Association (IDA) fund, the World Bank's fund for the poorest countries that helps fight poverty in Africa. We want you to join this conversation by submitting your video today! In a 2-minute video, answer the following question: If you were asked to advise the Bank on what to fund in your village, your town, your province, your state or your country to reduce poverty, what would you recommend and why?

Videos must be submitted by Monday, November 22nd. (11:59pm GMT).

Selection Process

We are looking for videos that will make an impact on the future of IDA as well as messages that will inspire global audiences.

Video entries will be judged based on the following criteria:

  • Make an impact! - What kind of impact will the video message have on the future of IDA?
  • Be a leader! - What kind of an impact will your message have on world leaders discussing IDA?
  • Inspire change! - Is the video message compelling enough to inspire change among how global audiences think about development?
  • Be significant! - How significant is the video message to IDA and issues of development?
  • Be unique! - Is the video message unique in comparison to other video entries?
  • Be authentic! - Are you speaking to a development issue that is sincerely important to you?

Judges and Prizes

  • The top ten videos will be selected by a World Bank team from the Africa Region. Selections will be announced on December 8, 2010.
  • The top ten videos will be shown during the World Bank International Development Association (IDA) meeting on December 8, 2010. The outcome of the voting process is final and binding.
  • Attendees at the annual meetings exhibition will submit their vote on the winning video. The outcome of the voting process is final and binding.
  • The winning video will be announced on December 20, 2010.
  • The winning video will be posted on the World Bank Africa Region website.
  • There is no financial compensation for the winning video.

What kind of videos are you looking for?
The video must be no longer than 2 minutes in length and must answer the question: "If you were asked to advise the Bank on what to fund in your village, your town, your province, your state or your country to reduce poverty, what would you recommend and why?" You must possess necessary permission for all the material used in the video (video footage, still photographs, music, etc). Only works not already published may be submitted and you must possess all copyrights of your images. Video submissions may not contain any offensive or inappropriate content.

Will I be notified if I was NOT chosen as a finalist or winner?
Due to the large number of submissions, only the contestants of the top ten videos will be notified of their status by December 8, 2010. If you do not hear from the World Bank by December 8, then your video was not selected. The contestant of the winning video will be notified by December 20, 2010.

Terms & Conditions

  • Only entries submitted from a YouTube platform will be eligible for consideration. YouTube URL links can be submitted through our online entry form. To sign up for an account on YouTube, please visit http://www.youtube.com/create_account.
  • Video entries should be two (2) minutes in duration or less.
  • Video submissions should be original and unpublished work by the contestant.
  • The submitted video must address development in reference to the International Development Association. For more information about IDA, please visit http://www.worldbank.org/ida.

  • The country and age of the contestant must be clearly indicated in the YouTube user profile to be eligible for consideration.
  • Video submissions may not contain any offensive or inappropriate content, according to World Bank principles and practices, and must comply with YouTube's general terms and conditions.
  • Current or former staff members, interns or retirees of the World Bank, its Agencies, Funds or Programs and any family and/or house-hold members of these staff members are not eligible for consideration in the contest.
  • Submissions will end on November 22, 2010 at 11:59 p.m. GMT. Any entry submitted after this time will not be accepted. Any video modified after the end of the contest will not be eligible.
  • The top ten videos will be announced, via email, on December 8, 2010. The winning video will be announced by December 20, 2010 and posted on the official World Bank Africa Region website: www.worldbank.org/africa.
  • The World Bank reserves the right to ammend contest rules at any time.

By submitting a video submission to the competition I accept the full terms and conditions contained herein. I have read and understood the rules of the competition and confirm that the video content I am submitting is my own unpublished work. By submitting my video, I hereby grant the World Bank full permission to freely use my video submission as appropriate, including cross-posting on other YouTube channels, World Bank websites and by World Bank Group partners.

Should my video be chosen as a finalist or winning entry, I agree to surrender the rights to distribute my work to the World Bank Group. The World Bank Group will have the right to freely use the material. I agree not to enter into any third-party agreements without the knowledge and agreement of the World Bank, during, upon and after completion of the contest. Any agreements or arrangements for distribution and/or publication of the winning entries conducted without the knowledge and prior consent by the World Bank Group may result in disqualification and forfeiting of any benefits offered by the competition.

Entrants are entirely responsible for all entry-related costs, including but not limited to purchase or renting of equipment, use of computer systems, transmission fees, etc. The organizer is not responsible for any damage or loss that may occur during the sending of entries via the Internet.
