The Transitional Demobilization and Reintegration Program (TDRP) in the Africa Region is pleased to invite you to the conference.

Through two large partnerships—the Multi-country Demobilization and Reintegration Program (2002-2009) and the TDRP (2009-2013)—the World Bank has been involved in demobilization and reintegration activities in the Great Lakes Region of Africa for more than 10 years. The wealth of experience from implementing, evaluating and researching DDR programs in the Great Lakes region represents a valuable resource to the larger community of DDR and social development practitioners.

Results and lessons from recent studies on reintegration in Burundi, the Democratic Republic of Congo, the Republic of Congo and Uganda will be presented at the conference, along with the perspectives from other countries and organizations. The following questions will be addressed:

  • How much reintegration can be achieved for $300 per ex-combatant?
  • Are economic associations effective in supporting the reintegration of ex-combatants?
  • What happens to demobilization and reintegration when conflict breaks out again?
  • Are ex-combatants more likely to migrate immediately after conflict?
  • Is working with civil society effective in the reintegration experience?

Through this sharing of experiences and lessons, we hope to contribute to a better understanding of DDR in post-conflict contexts and to the larger reflection on peace consolidation once DDR has been completed.
