Last updated, April 2007 The Republic of Congo joined the World Bank in 1963. Since then, World Bank assistance through 32 projects has focused on an agenda aimed at reviving economic growth (with adequate attention to both the sequencing of reforms and social policies) and tackling governance issues (both to improve service delivery and to diminish opportunities for rent-seeking behaviors). Political instability within the country and accumulated non-payments of debts to IDA and IBRD led to a stop-go relationship between Congo and the Bank in 1997. The Bank re-engaged with a Transitional Support Strategy in January 2001 and one in August 2003. This enabled the following projects to be implemented: 
| Transparency and Governance Project: a US$7 million project which with emphasis on: (i) transparency of decision making in the government and its agencies; (ii) government disengagement from the economy to strengthen the Privatization Committee; and (iii) the design of a new information data collection system in the social ministries of education and health. | HIV/AIDS and Health Project: a US$19 million project which seeks to slow the spread of HIV-AIDS and strengthen support and care for people infected or affected by HIV-AIDS. Read more (PDF)... | 
| Emergency Recovery and Community Support Project: a US$41 million project that aims to support recovery of communities located in smaller municipalities and rural areas (i.e., all areas out of the two cities of Brazzaville and Pointe Noire). It will provide targeted capacity-building support to help implement economic reforms which are critical for the revitalization of the local economy. Read more (PDF)... | 
| Basic Education Support Project: a US$20 million project that aims to improve efficiency in the allocation and management of resources, improve the quality of the education services offered, and reduce the inequities in the provision of these services. Read more... |
