Project Description
The Project finances the construction and rehabilitation of key road transport links that will remove constraints to growth and increase access to the country’s marginal and drought areas. Also, the program helps to develop the capacity and increase the participation of local consultants and contractors in the implementation of road contracts.
Road transport is the dominant mode of transport in Ethiopia and it plays a pivotal role in supporting economic and social development. Roads carry about 95 percent of the country’s passenger and freight traffic and they provide the only form of access to most rural communities. The program, aside the benefits to the country’s economy, will also support major institutional reforms in the road transport sector. The road works is expected to lead to substantial savings in vehicle operating and infrastructure maintenance costs, as well as reductions in travel time and transport costs for road users in the rural areas.
