Malaria is estimated to be responsible for one out of every four child deaths. It impacts economic growth and productivity and almost 170 million working days are lost annually due to the disease.

With the support of the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria, the Government of Kenya has launched an aggressive campaign to increase the number of children sleeping under bednets. Although significant resources have been allocated to controlling malaria, implementation difficulties have limited progress. In response, the World Bank Total War Against HIV/AIDS Project for US$80 million, with joint funding from DIFID of an additional US$33 million, includes US$ 4million dollars for bednets that will be distributed to people living with HIV/AIDS in malaria affected zones.

As part of the project, US$4 million dollars worth of bednets will be procured for free distribution to people living with HIV/AIDS that are in malaria transmission zones. The Booster Program is also looking into other opportunities for boosting malaria control activities in the country.
