Contributes significantly to the country's child mortality rates, which is highest in the world; more than 25% of all children born in Niger die before reaching their fifth birthday.
The Booster Program aims to build on the recent achievements in malaria control in Niger with a US$10 million credit, which has been added to a US$25 million health sector support program (a Sector Wide Approach, or SWAp), approved by the Bank's Board of Executive Directors on January 5, 2006. The IDA contribution will support the Ministry of Health to address the close links and complex interfaces between malaria and other issues- for example, malaria and reproductive health, as well as malaria and immunization.

Approximately 250,000 long lasting insecticidal nets (LLINs) will be distributed in Niger with World Bank support over the next two years, protecting over 500,000 people. Approximately 750,000 treatments of ACTs are expected to be distributed—mainly to children under 5 years of age—through the Booster Program. In addition, the project will provide broader health sector support to improve resource allocation and prioritization, address human resource issues and target other maternal and child health priorities.
