Transmission occurs throughout the country, with all of Senegal’s almost 12 million residents living in malaria-endemic areas.
Senegal benefits from substantial support from the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, TB, and Malaria, which has particularly supported the shift to artemisinin based combination therapies. Insecticide-treated bednet coverage, however, remains less than 10%. The Booster Program support is a US$5 million addition to a US$10 million Nutrition Enhancement Project, with a primary focus on distribution of long-lasting insecticide treated bednets through community groups. In addition, as part of the Senegal River Basin Water Resources Development Project, the Senegalese population living in the river basin will also benefit from long-lasting insecticide-treated bednets.

During 2007 and 2008, the nutrition enhancement project intends to purchase 500,000 LLINs to be distributed to 5,000 pregnant women and 495,000 children who live in targeted communities. These interventions, which are an integral part of the national malaria control strategy supported by partners including the Global Fund and the U.S. President's Malaria Initiative, among others, will significantly reduce the transmission of malaria.
