World Bank Board Approves First Booster Phase II Project

The World Bank’s Board of Executive Directors has approved a new $100 million credit to support Nigeria’s Malaria Plus Package. The Malaria Control Booster Project for Nigeria seeks to provide improved access to and utilization of a malaria plus package (MPP) of interventions in participating states. It will also strengthen federal and state capacity to manage and oversee delivery of MPP interventions. The new malaria funding builds on the $180 million approved in 2006.

The National Malaria Control Program, with the full support of Nigeria’s development partners, recently committed itself to a strategy of universal coverage for all malaria interventions as the optimal approach to malaria control. This new strategy expands the programmatic focus from children under five and pregnant women to the entire population at risk, and emphasizes health systems strengthening as well as a more vigorous mobilization of communities and the private sector. This additional support will be used to help close remaining gaps for net distribution, malaria treatment, diagnostics, awareness-raising, behavior change communication, and engagement of grassroots organizations in the fight against malaria in Nigeria.
