Our vision: Africa free from HIV/AIDS

The AIDS Campaign Team for Africa (ACTafrica) was formed in 1999 to support and coordinate the Bank's multi-sectoral response to HIV/AIDS in Africa. ACTafrica initially focused on supporting the development and implementation of the Bank's Multi-Country HIV/AIDS Program (MAP), now active in over 30 African countries. As the epidemic and global response have evolved, ACTafrica has shifted emphasis to generation and dissemination of knowledge and provision of targeted technical support to countries. ACTafrica also serves as the focal point for the execution of the Bank's Africa Region HIV/AIDS Agenda for Action (2007-2011). As of January 1, 2010, ACTafrica is part of the Disease Control Program of the Africa Region - Health, Nutrition and Population
ACTafrica serves as the region's focal point and clearinghouse on HIV/AIDS and provides a variety of services, including:
  • Quality assurance;
  • Overseeing implementation of the MAP;
  • Knowledge generation, dissemination, and exchange;
  • Technical support, advisory services, internal advocacy, capacity building and learning.
  • Facilitating mainstreaming of HIV/AIDS into the Bank's work in multiple sectors;
  • Development of World Bank strategy on HIV/AIDS in Africa;
  • Strategic support for delivering results;
  • Partnership development and management;
  • Within UNAIDS, strategic planning, supply chain, M&E, learning and scaling up treatment & prevention, integration into sectors
