Interurban/Transrural

Knowledge about interurban and trans-rural transport services in Sub-Saharan Africa is limited. It is known from earlier studies that the cost of transport services in Africa, particular in the case of freight are on average three to five times as expensive asĀ in developing countries in Asia and Latin America. However, updated information is not yet available. During the SSATP 2005 Annual Meeting in Mali, studies in the area of interurban and trans-rural transport services will be proposed for execution during the final years (2006 and 2007) of the Long Term Development Plan. Such studies should cover a number of countries, propose an appropriate low-cost methodology (to cover further countries) and should provide the core information needed for policy-makers to intervene, if necessary, to enhance interurban and trans-rural transport services and make them more affordable.
