“It is the vision of the World Bank Group to contribute to an inclusive and sustainable globalization – to overcome poverty, enhance growth with care for the environment, and create individual opportunity and hope.”
- Robert B. Zoellick, President, The World Bank Group

Achieving sustainable development is an overarching objective of the World Bank Group’s efforts, in Africa and globally. Broadly defined, sustainable development is about reducing poverty through shared economic growth, promoting social well-being, and protecting the environment.
Africa is on the move.
Economic growth rates are up, violent conflict is down, and important social indicators such as education and health are on the rise. The average growth rate for Sub-Saharan Africa stood at 5.3 percent in 2006, a level expected to be sustained in 2007. Even as we recognize progress in the continuing fight against poverty, we cannot be complacent. Sub-Saharan Africa faces huge development challenges, and it is the only region in the world that is likely to fall short of achieving most of the Millennium Development Goals by 2015.

“We are going to engage with countries on the basis of their choice of priorities, on the basis of what they have strategically put on the table as being important to them.”
- Obiageli Ezekwesili, Vice President for Africa, The World Bank
