Collection and Dissemination of IK

One of the strategic objectives of the IK Program is to raise awareness by collecting and disseminating successful examples of indigenous practices which can help achieve development results. The following are examples of the activities supported by the IK Program which have produced specific outcomes in this area:    | - To mark five years of the IK Progam, a new publication - Indigenous Knowledge: Local Pathways to Global Development was launched on October 20th, 2004 in Dar es Salaam led by Tanzania's President, H.E. President Mkapa. Parallel launch events were held in Ougadougou, Burkina Faso, led by Minister Ouedraogo for Arts, Culture and Tourism and in Washington, D.C., led by Frannie Leautier, WBI Vice President and Gerard Byam, AFTQK Director.
- The IK program database has collected/synthesized over 280 cases of indigenous practices from around the globe.
- Launched "IK Notes" and published over 85 issues (in English, French, Swahili, Portuguese and Wolof on the web and in print, reaching about 20,000 readers)
- Published Community Knowledge Exchange Toolkit (in print and CD/ROM) and disseminated to policy makers, NGOs and donors.
- Published and disseminated Guidelines on Integrating IK in Project Planning and Implementation.
- Developed multimedia toolkits (online and CD/ROM) on using IK to achieve the MDGs (e.g. HIV/AIDS, Maternal Mortality) and disseminated to development practitioners.
- Published seminal report "IK for Development: a Framework for Action" to provide the analytical basis for the launch of IK Program.
- Published several papers that describe the role IK can play to enrich the development process.
- Prepared brochures in English , French and Portuguese to raise awareness .
- Several IK presentations in the World Bank and to external audiences (e.g., 2 nd Global Knowledge Conference, NORAD, AVSP, UNDP, GTZ, SDC, APQC, SID, FAO, IFAD, IMF, UNCTAD, Red Cross, Chemonics, NTCA, FEI, WIPO , Club du Sahel, APQC Knowledge Conferences, Harvard University’s LILA).
- Organized several knowledge sharing kiosks at various knowledge conferences inside and outside the World Bank. IK-related material (reports, toolkits, brochures) disseminated to participants.
- Incorporated IK-related issues into the Global Development Gateway (GDG).
