Summary: The project seeks raise awareness about HIV/AIDS among different youth groups in secondary schools in Accra. The West Africa Secondary School in Ghana will be the first school in Africa to promote HIV/AIDS prevention, treatment and care based on traditional and modern medicines. The target groups will be between 12-22 years old and will be trained by school tutors on community based responses to HIV/AIDS. The objective is to develop the capacity of student peer educators who can promote behavior change in other schools across the country. The project seeks modest funding from the National AIDS Commission.

Theresa Kwakye, Member of the District Assembly, Komenda - Cape Coast (pdf)

Summary: Mrs. Kwakye has setup an NGO that promotes community based responses to HIV/AIDS. Her proposal seeks to build on her current work to promote local languages as a medium of creating awareness; use traditional healers and medicines to treat AIDS symptoms; and involve all stakeholders in the management of the disease, including herbalists, spiritual leaders, doctors, nurses and community based organization. The objective is to promote safe sex, voluntary testing and counseling and treatment and care based on local solutions.

Summary: HOPE is an NGOthat promotes a special diet, referred to as GCCI and YESA3, that can help treat HIV/AIDS patients. The diet is natural with a few side effects. HOPE has secured funding from the National AIDS Commission to conduct clinical trials to monitor the impact of the herbal treatment and provide access to such treatment on a larger scale. HOPE plans to partner with the Ministry of Agriculture to scale up the cultivation of the indigenous food crops used to treat AIDS patients and develop appropriate packaging and marketing strategies.
