Tanga AIDS Working Group – Traditional Healers in Tanzania
This is the story of the Tanga AIDS Working Group (TAWG), an NGO in Tanga, Tanzania where the use of traditional medicinal practices was successful in treating the opportunistic diseases associated with AIDS, and prolonging the lives of people living with AIDS (PLWA) by an average of about 5 years. In this debriefing, David Scheinman reflects on the unique experience TAWG, and how they work with the traditional healer community in Tanzania, using their traditional knowledge to reduce suffering and prolong the lives of the poor living in their community.

Indigenous Knowledge to Reduce Infant Mortality
This is the story of the Iganga community in Uganda, where an innovative approach linking traditional and modern health services supported by adapted and simple technology has succeeded in reducing maternal mortality rates reportedly by about 50% in three years. Maria Musoke, currently at Makerere University, has been collaborating with the Rural Extended Services and Care for Ultimate Emergency Relief (RESCUER) project in the Iganga district of Uganda. In this debriefing, she reflects on the project’s unique features.
