Accidental Oil Spill in Kribi (Cameroon)
January 23, 2007 -- In recent days the World Bank Group has been in contact with the Cameroon Oil Transportation Company (COTCO), which operates the Chad-Cameroon Pipeline in Cameroon, and with the Pipeline Steering and Monitoring Committee (PSMC) about an accidental oil spill at the marine terminal of the Chad-Cameroon Pipeline that was reported last week. Information received from COTCO and PSMC indicates that the company implemented the oil spill response plan, which is part of its obligations as stated in the Environmental Management Plan (EMP) required by the pipeline project, and that contamination was contained or dispersed to high sea.
In its dialogue with the PSMC, the Bank Group put emphasis on the need to keep the public and local communities fully informed on the event and of any mitigating measures to address eventual environmental and social problems that result.
A World Bank Group mission is traveling to Kribi today (January 23) to perform a preliminary assessment of the response to this accident in light of the commitments made by the Government and COTCO under the EMP.
