Why Trade Costs Matter to Afica

The World Bank is helping to fight poverty and improve living standards for the people of The Gambia. As of October 2008, the World Bank, through the International Development Association (IDA), had approved a total of 31 IDA credits for The Gambia for a total of approximately US$299 million. The commitment value of the currently five ongoing World Bank operations is approximately US$55.9 million.

The five currently active IDA operations are in the following areas:

Capacity Development for Economic Management
Education
Private Sector Development
Community-Driven Development
Natural Resources Management/Environmental Protection

In addition to IDA-funded projects, the World Bank is involved in various activities in the country which are funded by Trust Funds (for example by the Education for All-Fast Track Initiative Catalytic Funds, and the Global Environment Facility).

For more information on the role of the World Bank in The Gambia, please refer to the Country Brief.
