Overview

The Gambia joined the World Bank in 1967. Since then, World Bank assistance on 34 projects totaling about US$296 million equivalent has helped the country promote economic growth and reduce poverty. As of August 2006, there were seven projects with a total commitment value of about US$86.9 million underway. Active projects include:

Gambia Gateway Project: a US$16 million project which seeks to enable The Gambia to establish itself as a globally competitive export and processing center. The project is a key component of the Government's strategy for achieving broad-based, export-oriented, and sustained growth. Read more...
   
Capacity Building for Economic Management Project: a US$15 million operation that will help build the Government capacity for economic policy formulation, and execution, including capacity building of the judicial, and financial systems, to facilitate private sector development. Read more...
   

HIV/AIDS Rapid Response Project: a US$15 million project (within the context of the Multi-Country HIV/AIDs Program for the Africa Region) with the objective of assisting the Government of the Gambia to stem a rapid growth of HIV/AIDS through maintaining the current low epidemic levels, reducing its spread and mitigating its effects, and increasing access to prevention services.  Read more...
