Ghana at Crossroads Again! Many Accomplishments Yet Many New Challenges...
After decades of good but sometimes difficult progress, Ghana recognizes that it still faces important challenges in its development trajectory. These are clearly outlined in the new, medium term development framework which has just been issued in draft form. Perhaps the biggest, and certainly the most high profile challenge in the immediate future, is the arrival of oil and gas in the fourth quarter of 2010 which, while providing important new revenues for the country, poses economy wide risks. The arrival of oil and gas, along with Ghana’s progress to-date, also poses the question of how much aid Ghana will continue to receive, particularly from some bilateral development partners who have priorities in fragile or very low income International Development Association (IDA) states. Yet, Ghana stands at an important cross road: many accomplishments under its belt yet it still faces a number of new challenges.
