A workshop was held from May 19 – 20, 2005 in Shanzu, Mombasa to initiate consultations on a proposed Joint Kenya Poverty Assessment (JKPA). Participants included representatives from the Ministry of Planning and the Central Bureau of Statistics (funded by GTZ), local civil society and economic research institutions (funded by DFID and SIDA), and development partners who are members of the National Economic Recovery Strategy Monitoring and Evaluation Steering Committee (the World Bank, UNDP, CIDA, DFID, GTZ).
The results of the workshop will provide an input into the preparation of a concept paper which will lay out the work plan for the JKPA, assign specific responsibilities for the topics to be covered, budget and oversight arrangements, including progress reports and proposals for "peer review" arrangements. The Bank will establish a website on its country page for Kenya which will include all the documentation from the workshop, report on future proposed consultations on the JKPA and include a draft of the proposed concept note for feedback prior to the concept paper review meeting in September.
Future consultations would focus on analysis of the role of growth in promoting poverty reduction, the use of evidenced based economic research to assess the impact of targeted poverty interventions and involving sector colleagues in the preparation of the assessment.
