Overview

Kenya has been a member of the World Bank since 1964. Since then, World Bank assistance has focused on stimulating economic growth and reducing poverty. Creating an improved environment for investment and growth in agriculture, manufacturing, tourism, and in small- and medium-size enterprises is important.  Financial sector reform will also be critical to stimulate growth and reduce poverty. Projects approved in recent years include: 
   

The Natural Resource Management (NRM) Project is a US $68.5 million loan that will be used to reduceKenya ’s vulnerability to floods and droughts arising from mismanagement of water and forests. The project will strengthen key national institutions.  It will also target communities in the critical Upper Tana catchment and key ecosystems in the Nzoia and Yala river basins, linking with the Western Kenya project.

The Western Kenya CDD and Flood Mitigation Project is a US $86 million loan that aims to  provide technical support and funding for demand-driven, income-generating micro projects in 600 communities, including 200 projects earmarked for youth groups in Siaya and Bondo, Western Kenya. There is also funding for the fight against malaria. Over one million community members will directly benefit from CDD activities.
The Development of The National Statistical System Project is a US $20.5 million credit that aims at establishing a sustainable national statistical system to provide reliable, timely and accurate data in accordance with international standards through: (a) strengthening the capacity of the relevant statistical agencies through training and adoption of new information and communication technology; (b) carrying out legal and institutional reforms that promote statistical data.
Agricultural Productivity Project (KAPP) :  a US $40 million  project with the aim to improve the system supporting generation, dissemination, and adoption of agricultural technology through: reforms in extension to increase pluralism, responsiveness to clients, and participation by private providers;  evolutionary change in the existing system of agricultural research to improve accountability and impact; and increased empowerment of  producer   organizations to influence the   planning,   design,   implementation,   funding and monitoring and evaluation of research, extension, training and capacity building activities.  Read more...
  Nairobi Water and Sewerage Institutional Restructuring Project :  a US $15 Million project that aims to build a strong governance, institutional, and service delivery framework that will enable efficient and sustainable delivery of water, and sewerage services to the population of Nairobi.  Read more...    
Northern Corridor Transport Improvement Project: a US $207 million  projects with the following objectives:  increase efficiency of road transport along the Northern Corridor to facilitate trade and regional integration; enhance aviation safety and security to meet international standards; and promote private sector participation in the management, financing and maintenance of road assets.  Read more...
 Arid Lands Resource Management Project:  a US $60 million project, it will be implemented over six years and aims to mitigate the risk posed by drought and other factors by strengthening and institutionalizing natural resources and drought management systems.  This in turn will reduce the vulnerability of the population in an area which is characterized by frequent, acute food insecurity related to drought.   Read more...
