A landlocked, mountainous country surrounded by South Africa, Lesotho has been adversely affected by both the global financial crisis and the HIV/AIDS pandemic. The World Bank is assisting the government as it works to enhance competitiveness, foster private sector–led growth, make the public sector more efficient, improve service delivery, and diversify its economic base.
