Mauritania Looks Forward Despite Challenges

After a protracted period of political upheaval, Mauritania recently elected a new leadership as the country takes on poverty, climate change, and other challenges.

The World Bank is helping to fight poverty and improve the living standards for the people in Mauritania. As of September 2009, the World Bank had approved a total of 86 credits and grants for Mauritania for a total of approximately US$1.14 billion. The Bank’s current portfolio consists of 17 national and regional projects supporting rural development, urban development, education and health, among others, and representing US$413 million in commitments from International Development Association (IDA), of which US$175 million is undisbursed.
World Bank operations are in the following areas:

  • mining and energy
  • rural development
  • social sector operations
  • urban development
