Presentations: Second workshop on Large Infrastructure Financing (February 7, 2008) Large Infrastructure Financing Workshop I - Last Year (2007) The two-day workshop held in Maputo, was attended by over 130 private investors; government officials from Mozambique, Angola, and Malawi; project sponsors; international financiers; bilateral assistance agencies; and World Bank Group specialists. The various financial products of the World Bank Group were presented, including: risk capital and advisory services for private investments (International Finance Corporation, IFC); political risk insurance (Multilateral Investment Guarantee Agency, MIGA); partial risk guarantees (World Bank); concessional lending (World Bank); and financing of carbon reduction credits (through the World Bank management of the Carbon Fund). Workshop sessions also discussed international best practices in public-private partnerships (PPP) and reviewed PPP experiences in Mozambique and other countries. In addition, government officials and other sponsors made presentations highlighting investment opportunities in energy, minerals and transport sectors, many of which involve several countries in the southern Africa Region. Based on the large attendance at the workshop and the many comments made by the participants, there appears to be significant potential for private investment in large infrastructure projects in Mozambique and its neighboring countries, including Malawi and Angola.
