Mozambique's Extractive Industry Transparency Initiative Workshop

The World Bank and parteners organized on October 23, 2008 a workshop aimed at reaching consensus on Mozambique's plans to implement the Extractive Industry Transparency Initiative (EITI) and to start the process aimed at making Mozambique become an eventual EITI candidate. The workshop built on the Government's commitment earlier this year to adhere to EITI and followed closely on the outcome of another mission carried out jointly between the government and donor partners on the value-chain approach to the petroleum and mining sectors in Mozambique.

The Ministry of Minerals Resources (MIREM) is the lead agency within Government on EITI, and the launch workshop was organized by a Government team led by MIREM and comprised of the Ministry of Planning and Development MPD and the Ministry of Finance MOF. The Ministers of Mineral Resources chaired the meeting that was also attended by the Minister of Plannig and Development.

There was broad participation and attendance by a wide cross-section of stakeholder representatives, including government, the Central Bank, civil society, mining and petroleum companies, and international donor partners.

The Minister's opening speech restated clearly the Government’s formal adoption of and commitment to EITI, as a decision of the State Council of Ministers, and noted EITI's role in the overall governance of the oil, gas, and mining sector as well as the overall investment climate.
