Seychelles became a member of the World Bank in 1980. Since then, the World Bank has approved two IBRD loans for Seychelles for a total amount of approximately US$10.7 million. These two closed World Bank projects focused on environmental and transportation issues:

The Environment and Transport Project: a US $4.5 million project approved in December 1992 focused on (i) restoring and preserving the Aldabra ecosystem; (ii) protecting sea turtles to define the sustainable exploitation level of the Green turtle to accommodate domestic consumption; and (iii) evaluating the reception and disposal facilities needed to comply with the International Convention for the Prevention of Marine Pollution from Ships (MARPOL) requirements and (iv) controlling pollution from fishing and commercial vessels, cruise ships, and yachts. A Transport Project for US$6.2 million was approved in February 1985. It was designed to improve the capacity and quality of key parts of the transport system, specifically in the commercial port and highway sub-sectors. The project included dredging of the entrance channel and the ship turning basin, construction of petroleum products and cement discharge terminal, and rehabilitation of the road network. Read more... |
