Indigenous Knowledge (IK) Notes Survey prepared by Claudia Rueger Since 1998, IK Notes has been reporting on ongoing development issues that are effectively dealt with through the application of indigenous knowledge and practices. The IK Notes publication documents and disseminates Indigenous Knowledge-based practices in order to facilitate their integration into the development work of local communities, NGOs, governments, donors, civil society and the private sector. But what does our readership think of the publication and its subject in concrete terms? What are the applications of lessons readers have taken from the IK Notes series to their work, and has it made a difference to their work? To get answers to questions such as these and to better tailor the IK Notes series to our readerships' needs, we have designed a questionnaire for our readers to provide their input. Take the IK Notes Survey: http://www4.worldbank.org/afr/ik/ik.htm. 1. Findings 261: Sierra Leone: The Role of the Rapid Results Approach in Decentralization and Strengthening Local Governance written by Ronnie Hammad and Basma Ammari, and based on excerpts from "Supporting Governance Transformation in Sierra Leone through Devolution and Strengthening Local Governance", July 2005 by Yongmei Zhou. Though Sierra Leone is endowed with rich natural resources, it is one of the poorest countries in the world. An eleven-year war over the period 1991-2002 destroyed the country’s infrastructure and social fabric. The concentration of political power and public resources in the capital city Freetown and the marginalization of the provinces were perceived as one of the root causes of the war. In 2004, Sierra Leone ranked bottom in the United Nations Human Development Indicators, and 70% of the population is said to be under the poverty line. 2. Infobrief 123: Rwanda: Agricultural and Rural Market Development excerpted from Implementation Completion Report No. 29556 This Credit of US$5 million was a Learning and Innovation Loan ( LIL ) – 1999-2003 -whose objective was to contribute to the revitalization of the country’s agricultural and rural economy by identifying policies and institutional mechanisms to : (a) promote efficient, private sector-based local agricultural input distribution and out put marketing systems in order to (b) raise modern farm input use among farmers and thereby the productivity of labor and levels of income in the rural sector. The project was implemented in 20 districts, representing about 25% of the total number of districts; it affected 21,00 farm families, with a population of 1.05 million, including about 1,000 lead farmers and 1,000 Farmers’Associations. http://www.worldbank.org/afr/findings/infobeng/infob123.htm (HTML) http://www.worldbank.org/afr/findings/infobeng/infob123.pdf (PDF)
