Overview

Somalia joined the World Bank in 1962. Since then, World Bank assistance on 40 projects totaling about US$526 million has helped the country work towards improving governance, promoting economic growth and reducing poverty. As of August 2006, the lending program with the Bank was inactive.

Completed World Bank projects have included: 

Education Rehabilitation Project: a US$26.1 million project designed to  revitalize the education system through sustainable measures designed to restore teaching quality and reverse the decline in enrollments.  Read more...  
     

Farahaane Irrigation Rehabilitation Project: a US$28.5 million operation seeking to raise food production by about 5,600 smallholders through rehabilitation of a net irrigated area in Farahaane, reconstruction of two barrages, and strengthened services such as extension, input supply, and on-farm trials and demonstrations.  Read more... 
         

Power Rehabilitation Project: a US$12.5 million project with the objective of improving the efficiency and reliability of power supply and distribution and meeting some of the unserved demand in Mogadishu, Somalia's main economic area.  Read more...
