Overview

Sudan joined the World Bank in 1957. The World Bank has provided assistance on 60 projects totaling about US$1.52 billion.  As of March 2007, there were no active World Bank projects because of significant arrears on past debt-servicing obligations (refer to the Country Brief for more information).

Some of the completed World Bank projects in Sudan include:

Khartoum - Port Sudan Road Rehabilitation Project: a US$82.2 million project that financed urgently needed repairs on Sudan's main transport artery so that it could remain open and functional and would extend the useful life of the road. Read more...
                

Southern Kassala Agricultural Project: a US$20 million project that addressed two key constraints to agricultural development in southern Kassala: (i) declining productivity in the face of increasing population and relative scarcity of land, and; (ii) environmental degradation. Read more...
   
Fourth Power Project: a US$38 million project with the objective of providing generation capacity to meet projected demand in the Blue Nile and Eastern grid areas by 1991 and strengthening the National Electricity Corporation (NEC) via various institutional improvements.  Read more...
   
 

Stock Route Project: a US$5.5 million project designed to ensure the continued flow of marketed livestock from the areas of Western Sudan to the principal towns and for export, by renewal and extension of water supplies and veterinary services along livestock trade routes. Read more...
