Dar es Salaam , August 20, 2007— The World Bank Tanzania Country Office staff on August 17, 2007, visited and donated gifts to students of Olof Palme Orphanage Secondary School representing contributions from country office staff. Total of 336,000 /- in cash as well as used clothes were donated by the staff. Out of the total amount, the team bought and provided food and hygiene products worth 274,800/-. The team agreed that the remaining balance of 61,200/ will be used for purchase of a sewing machine to be handed to the school at a date to be announced later. This will support a planned initiative by the UN spouses group to help the girls acquire other potential income earning skills.
The team toured the facilities of the school and held discussions with the school’s administrative leadership where it was told of challenges the school is currently facing. They include; lack of reliable transport, and the need for full time-employed teachers, teachers’ houses as well as dormitories to accommodate the growing number of the school population. It has 89 girls now in Form I and Form II with projection of admitting 30 girls in January 2008.
The Head Mistress, Ms. Mary Stella, said that the school currently two full time and five part-time teachers. The school needs six full time teachers to teach Kiswahili, English, Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics. Presently the school has only tow full time teachers. The team also heard of the impressive performance by the students-they work so hard, they do not waste time. The Head Mistress told the team that; “We keep on comparing ourselves with performance of other schools, not only in Dar es Salaam but with other schools too. Our girls score the highest,” Ms. Mary Stella told the team.
