Dar es Salaam , August 13, 2007— An elderly group in Bukabile village, Magu District in Shinyanga region owns six acres of land. The Tanzania Social Action Fund (TASAF) which receives support from the World Bank visited the group and provided an input of US $300 (approximately 3.5million Tanzania shillings) to start horticultural gardening under the income generating activities. The two acres have been cultivated and planted with tomatoes, onions and cabbage. Four months after the intervention, the group generated about US $ 240 (about 2.9m/-) by selling of horticultural products from the two-acre garden. The group was so happy that such intervention managed to uplift the lives of beneficiaries out of poverty within such a short time. The group was also able to get technical skills from the Local Government Authorities (LGA) agricultural extension officers that helped to increase yields. Mr. Bonaventura Mashishanga (62) and father of four says he was able to send two of his children to school from dividend he got from the group. “I will use the skills I got from the group and start my own garden,” he said while thanking TASAF for the intervention.
