The Social Development Civil Society Fund The World Bank Tanzania Office is pleased to announce the availability of funds under the Social Development Civil Society Fund (CSF) for 2008. The activities to be funded by the Fund aim to facilitate the empowerment of citizens for more inclusive and equitable development. The Fund was created in 1983 to promote dialogue and disseminate information to forums outside regular World Bank operations/projects. The World Bank invites interested Tanzanian Civil Society Organizations to submit their applications and proposals (closing date: April 15, 2008) on innovative ideas that focus on Civic Engagement to improve community level development through innovative good governance practices. Community Projects Uplifts Livelihoods in Rural Tanzania An elderly group in Bukabile village, Magu District in Shinyanga region owns six acres of land. The Tanzania Social Action Fund (TASAF) which receives support from the World Bank visited the group and provided an input of US $300 (approximately 3.5million Tanzania shillings) to start horticultural gardening under the income generating activities. Beginning with a credit from the World Bank's International Development Association (IDA) for education in 1963, over US$5.8 billion in credits and US$274 million in grants have so far been approved. Currently, the portfolio comprises of 21 active projects with commitments of $1.7 billion in all major sectors. The undisbursed balance stands at $1.1 billion.
