Togo joined the World Bank in 1962. Since then the World Bank has provided assistance on over fifty projects as well as through a variety of grants focused on measures to restore macroeconomic stability, provide basic health, education and urban services, and rehabilitate essential infrastructure.
Lending was suspended in 2002 because of an accumulation of debt servicing arrears. In May 2008, the arrears were cleared thanks to a grant from the Bank as a result of reforms initiated by the Togolese government.
The World Bank subsequently developed an Interim Strategy to support Togo for the period between 2008 and 2010. Projects and programs identified in the context of this Interim Strategy are funded entirely by grants from the Bank.
