KAMPALA, February 2007 - I am Yusuf Kisekwa from ShinAfrika Foundation.  I made my first contact with the Public Information Center in 1999, I have since not looked back.  I am currently involved in leadership training, communications and knowledge management.  The PIC has effectively equipped me to position my self as a professional executive.  Secondly, with the state of art computer facility, the PIC has equipped me with much needed IT skills.

Moses Kinatta Munyani, Lecturer, Makerere University Business School says the facility has simplified his work and he does not have to pay to access the web, to get lecture notes and policy research papers to inform his teaching.

A visually impaired university student said – I first came into contact with a computer at the World Bank, this service has helped me carry out research and write coursework, since there are no reference books in Braille in university libraries.  I appeal to all visually impaired students to utilize this service.  Charles Adapa, Student, Bachelor of Arts Education, Nkumba University.

An Environment Consultant wrote, I have used World Bank literature and computers for my research and consultancies.  I was able to write a number of  research proposals for various development agencies such as the  Transboundary Diagnostic Analysis of Lake Victoria regions among others –Patrick Anukur, P & Carr Associates.

A university student said  he has used PIC research information to compile different research reports ranging from sanitation conditions, poverty eradication to governance.  Thadius Busingye, Makerere University.

A high school teacher said PIC resources have rejuvenated his teaching skills through the use of the internet and education publications.   “I was able to publish an economics pamphlet.”   However there is need for more computers, more magazines and newspapers.  Steven Kasiko, Aidan College.

It has been for me an edifying and enriching facility.  I am always happy to access an array of books on the newest and most pertinent issues in our country and in the world at large.  I believe it is one of the richest centers with materials on development issues in this country. Sister Solome Najjuka, Philosophy Center Jinja.

Levi Etobait a visually impaired regular beneficiary,   thanks the World Bank for providing the blind with access to the Internet and e-mails.  I would like to see a computer reserved for the blind, to   have unlimited access.  Secondly, can the Bank raise the number of computers for all its clients?

Recommendations from PIC Users

  • Increase awareness of services available in the PIC
  • Due to high demand for internet research, increase computers
  • Reserve a computer for the blind
  • Inclusion of a section on project planning, management  and evaluation
  • Allow borrowing of books
