Public Information Center Usage


KAMPALA, March 2007 - In this annual review of January  to December 2006,  the Uganda World BankPublic Information Center saw a 14%  increase in numbers of people using the facility.  Compared with 2005 the center received 5,343 visitors from  4,683.    The center with a seating capacity of 30, saw an increase in visitors per day from an average of 22 to 25. Visitors consisted of   academia 52%,  Ngos 20%, private sector 18%, Media 5%, government 4%, donors 1%.    

In addition, we registered increase in usage of the facility by persons with disabilities particularly the Visually Impaired.  This center is the only public Information facility equipped with assistive technology that offers access to internet resources for the blind.

 

The reason for increased usage of the Uganda Public Information Center can be attributed to:

·         Unique and up-to-date publications on various development topics availed.

·         Availability of current statistical information on specific countries.

·         Existence of   project information on World Bank supported programs, availed in the resource center such as Environmental Impact Assessments, Project Appraisal Documents.

·         Availability of free internet for academic and scientific research.

·         Accessibility to Assistive Technology for the visually impaired.

·         The demand for World Bank Procurement and Consultancy guidelines.

·         The quest for access to information on grants for NGOs and post graduate scholarships.

·         The location of the center, making it easy to access.

 

Channels through which new Public Information Center users learnt about the facility:

 

·         By word of mouth through satisfied users informing potential users.

·         The World Bank Pubic Information Center Website.picpicture

·         The Public Information Center Brochure.

·         Outreach efforts such as the presentation   the Bank Communications Team made to   Librarians country wide during the Library Association Annual Symposium on services offered in the Public Information Center.

·         Outreach to the visually impaired persons through Uganda National Association of the Blind, and the Youth Association for the Disabled.

 

Uganda Public Website Usage

 

An analysis of the Uganda public website covers all visits to the Uganda site from any part of the world.  The analysis reveals that over the last year, ending December 2006, the Uganda public website visits increased by 16%, from 19,420 in 2005 to 22,703.  On average, the website received 62 daily visits. 

 

The most visited Uganda website page is the ‘Country Briefs’ – 11%.  This page contains an overview of Uganda’s development results and challenges and    World Bank assistance to Uganda, with links to major sites.  Other pages highly visited are: Data and Statistics 9%, Projects and Programs 7%, Poverty Reduction Strategy Paper   5%, Publications & Reports 5%.   

 

New World Bank Publications Received

 

The center received 173 new publications of which 14 were on Sub-Saharan Africa.  Of these, the major publications were Africa Development Indicators, World Bank Annual Report, Doing Business Report, World Development Report 2007: Development and the next generation , World Development Indicators.
