Port Moresby, May 6, 2006 --Eighteen local organizations representing communities all over PNG were declared winners in the PNG Tingim Yut Kompetisen on Saturday 6 May at an awards day and youth showcase held at the Don Bosco Technical High School in Port Moresby.

Announcing the list of winners from a group of 24 finalists, World Bank Country Manager for PNG, Mr Benson Ateng, said everyone who had participated in the event – the first competition of its kind to be held in Papua New Guinea - was a winner.

The Minister for Education Mr Michael Laimo officiated at the Awards Day on behalf of Prime Minister Sir Michael Somare and presented the finalists and winners with certificates.

The winning groups will now have their projects funded for 12 months.

Early in the day, a jury panel of six eminent Papua New Guineans (Chief Ombudsman Mr Ila Genoa, Cabinet Secretary Ms Winnie Kiap, Dr Cecilia Nembou and Dr Mark Solon of Divine Word University, Dr Thomas Webster of the National Research Institute, and Mr Naihuwo Ahai of the Community Development Scheme) interviewed each of the 24 finalists about their project proposals.

While the jury panel was deciding on the winners, a crowd of over 600 people visited the finalists’ presentations and were entertained by theatre and musical performances as well as appearances by five young achievers – including Commonwealth Games medalists, weightlifter Dika Toua and swimmer Ryan Pini.

Both athletes called on the crowd of mainly young people to set goals for themselves and then work hard to achieve their life objectives.

The Tingim Yut Kompetisen is an initiative of the World Bank in partnership with Air Niugini, Airlines PNG, Bank South Pacific, Brian Bell, Coral Sea Hotels, Divine Word University, NASFUND, the Pacific Enterprise Development Facility, UNDP and UNICEF. It is designed to find and fund good ideas that benefit young people and their communities (see list of winners below).  After the initial call for submissions, 820 project proposals were received from groups all over PNG.
