The World Bank is working to support more than 20 countries in the East Asia and Pacific region by providing grants and low-interest loans for development projects, as well as expert advice and consulting services. In fiscal year 2006 the Bank's lending commitments worldwide reached US$23.6 billion for 279 projects. The Bank provided the region with US$3.4 billion or 14 percent of the total Bank commitments (US$1.1 billion in interest-free IDA loans and grants, and US$2.3 billion in low-interest loans from the IBRD). Among the top ten IBRD/IDA borrowers were China with around US$1.4 billion and Vietnam with US$768 million. Worldwide, the Bank's annual lending commitments reached US$23.6 billion in 2006 for 279 projects.
