World leaders and development institutions everywhere have reawakened to the importance of agriculture for economic growth and political stability in the developing world, realizing the need for science and technology to sustain progress in agriculture. This has been prompted by the convergence of several ominous trends – including global climate change, food price inflation, economic recession, energy market volatility and worsening water scarcity. Together, those trends present agriculture with a truly daunting set of challenges.
Upon the forthcoming visit by Mr. Ren Wang, Director of Consultative Group on International Agricultural Research (CGIAR), a public seminar “Global Challenges and Agriculture: Role of CGIAR” will be held, to discuss the importance of agriculture and agricultural research to tackle with these challenges.
