The Hands-on Training Workshop on RETScreen Clean Energy Project Analysis Software (RETScreen) was held by the Energy Program of The World Bank and Energy Department of Ministry of Industry and Trade in the World Bank Office in Hanoi on November 5 – 6, 2009.
The workshop is funded by the Energy Sector Management Assistance Programme (ESMAP) and coordinated by the World Bank.
The Energy Sector Management Assistance Program (ESMAP) is a global knowledge and technical assistance partnership administered by the World Bank and assists low- and middle-income countries to acquire know-how and increase institutional capability to secure clean, reliable, and affordable energy services for sustainable economic development.
The workshop is mainly intended to support the building of capacities in assessing renewable energy projects at a faster pace and at a lower cost by using the free-of-charge and easy-to-use tool of RETScreen Version 4.
The workshop covers:
an introduction on RETScreen Version 4,
the functionalities and capabilities of the tool, and
hands-on practice of participants in using the tool to assess several renewable energy cases.
RETScreen is a decision support tool developed by Natural Resources Canada with the contribution of numerous experts from government, industry, and academia.
Attending the training workshop were participants from government agencies promoting renewables, EVN, consulting companies and universities, etc. Also, because it was a hands on training, each participant needed to have a laptop or was provided one to carry out case study assessments of different RE technologies and learn on practical use of the software.

The software, provided free-of-charge, has the capacity to evaluate the energy production and savings, costs, emission reductions, financial viability and risk for various types of renewable-energy and energy-efficient technologies.
The software (available in multiple languages including Vietnamese) is Excel based and easy to use, containing built-in global climate data, energy equipment data, as well as e-text book.
RETScreen Version 4 (44MB) is available and is downloadable free of charge at http://www.retscreen.net/ after a registration with RETScreen International on line .
