World Bank Public Seminar Worldwide Lessons from Financial Crisis: From an Independent Evaluation’s Perspective

More than one year has pssed since the global financial crisis occurred. While the global economy has shown signs of recovery, the crisis impact is adversely affecting the efforts to achieve the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) and risking the livelihood of most vulnerable people across the world.

The World Bank will host a public seminar “Worldwide Lessons from Financial Crisis: From An Independent Evaluation’s Perspective” at 4:30pm-6:00pm on November 26, 2009, upon the visit by Mr. Vinod Thomas, Director General and Senior Vice President for Independent Evaluation Group of the World Bank Group. Mr. Thomas will discuss, from an independent evaluation’s perspective, the situation of post-crisis global development issues including poverty, growth, social safety net and climate change, and rapid response made by the World Bank Group and other financial institutions.

Speaker’s profile
Vinod Thomas is Director-General and Senior Vice-President, Independent Evaluation Group (IEG) at the World Bank Group. He reports directly to the Board of Executive Directors and oversees the activities of IEG-World Bank, IEG-IFC, and IEG-MIGA. He was formerly Country Director for Brazil and Vice President of the World Bank, a position that he held from October 2001 to July 2005. Prior to that, he held many key positions including Vice
President of the World Bank Institute (WBI), Chief Economist for the World Bank in the East Asia and Pacific Region, Director for the 1991 World Development Report "The Challenge of Development", and Chief of Trade Policy and Principal Economist for Colombia. Vinod Thomas joined the Bank in 1976. He has a Masters and PhD in Economics from of the University of Chicago. He has taught at Vassar College and the University of Sao Paulo, Brazil. He has written numerous books, reports and journal articles.
