Poverty Assessment 2006 From the late 1980s, Cambodia embarked on a transition from war to peace, from one-party to multi-party politics, and from an isolated, subsistence-oriented economy to one based on market principles and integrated into international trade and capital flows.
This newly released Cambodia Poverty Assessment of 2006 demonstrates various advances the country has made in previous years. The latest survey shows that now 35 percent of Cambodians live below the national poverty line, down from an estimated 47 percent a decade earlier. Cambodia has consolidated peace and achieved economic growth of about 7 percent per annum. The living standards of the population, including the poor, have improved greatly between 1994 and 2004. These gains reflect the development, both social and economic in which Cambodia has embarked upon, since transitioning from civil war to peace, and from one-party to multi-party politics. The Cambodian Government’s new five-year National Strategic Development Plan (NSDP) recognizes the need to address rural development and makes improving the lives and livelihoods of the rural poor a top priority. Accelerating poverty reduction in Cambodia is largely about helping to raise agricultural productivity and incomes. It is very possible for the plan to happen since Cambodia enjoys relatively favorable conditions for development, including, deep-water ports, plenty of flat cultivable terrain, productive freshwater fisheries, and a considerable stock of timber. The country's peace and economic openings have made the rapid growth and relatively rapid poverty reduction possible. As Cambodia enters its second post-conflict decade, it faces new challenges and rising expectations. !!
