This study, which reports on an outstanding success story for the Chinese government and the World Bank, summarizes the reduction of Ozone Depleting Substances (ODS) in China. Significant results include the fact that China met the freeze in ODS consumption in 1999 and is now on schedule to achieve its 50 percent CFC reduction (by 2005). The study highlights the key role played by the World Bank through its four Ozone Depleting Substance (ODS) projects, and the effectiveness of the performance based sector approach. It also sets out China's next steps and the Bank's future focus.
