East Asia Update April 2003

Looking Beyond Short-term Shocks
East Asia Update,
April 24, 2003

East Asia's recovery of recent years saw growth jumping from 3.5 percent in 2001 to nearly 6 percent in 2002. But that recovery is now being buffeted by a series of unexpected shocks - emanating from the aftermath of the Iraq crisis and the SARS outbreak in particular - putting East Asia in an international and regional environment as troubled and uncertain as any since the 1997-98 financial crisis.
