Randy Salim - 021 5299-3259 rsalim1@worldbank.org Yogyakarta, February 14, 2008: The World Bank and University of Gajah Mada today launched the Indonesia Development Information Services center (IDIS UGM) as both a library for World Bank publications and venue for development dialogues among Yogyakarta communities. The cooperation between the World Bank and UGM began in 2005 when a small book shelf at UGM’s Central Library was devoted to housing a series of publications from World Bank Headquarters and World Bank Indonesia. At the time, the UGM cooperation was just one of 16 World Bank RIOs (Regional Information Outlets) set up that year from Aceh to Papua. Since then UGM has shown great initiative in working with the World Bank to organize numerous events, including a public discussion on Gender Issues and the launch of the World Bank’s 2007 World Development Report. In recognition of UGM’s outstanding work in establishing its library as a center for development dialogue, the World Bank has contributed a range of new hi-tech facilities and resources that effectively upgrades the existing cooperation. Yogyakarta is now home to the only other Indonesia Development Information Services center outside the one found in the World Bank’s Jakarta office. From its humble beginnings of just one book shelf, IDIS UGM now boasts several new computer terminals, a flat-screen television and DVD player, a LCD projector, a free online database and a free e-library of World Bank publications. IDIS UGM is now also a registered World Bank Depository Library, and will receive new knowledge products from World Bank Headquarters on a regular basis. “Through its knowledge sharing activities, UGM has played an important role in helping make the World Bank a better development partner to Indonesia,” said Joachim von Amsberg, World Bank, Indonesia Country Director. “We are positive that IDIS UGM would continue to stimulate Yogyakarta communities to engage in discussions that could set the course of development for its region and country.” With a new name and more facilities, IDIS UGM aims to reach more users and expand its services. Under this new cooperation, the World Bank and UGM will intensify efforts to organize and facilitate seminars and knowledge-sharing sessions with various stakeholders in Yogyakarta, including from local government and civil society. About IDIS Indonesia Development Information Services, or IDIS, is a manifestation of the World Bank’s aim towards greater transparency. Under its 2002 information disclosure policy, the World Bank makes an enormous amount of operational information available to the public, ranging from project and policy documents to strategy and evaluation documents. This information is made available through public information centers like IDIS, established in World Bank member countries to promote better public understanding of Bank activities, better-informed participation in program and project design, and increased local ownership of programs and projects. The sum of these parts adds up to greater effectiveness of World Bank assistance and better results for the borrower.
In Indonesia, IDIS aims to engage communities in informed discussions and encourages public participation in the development of Indonesia by providing a forum for exchanging experiences. To promote knowledge sharing, IDIS utilizes a wide range of media and venues, including the internet, distance learning, symposia, dialogue, printed and audio visual materials available to the public in all centers.
