Other Recent Bank Contributions and Involvement

The Bank has been assisting Chinain the water sector, both urban and rural, for many years. This assistance has included sectoral analyses, technical assistance, and lending. Major recent analytical contributions include: Clear Water, Blue Skies: China ' s Environment in the New Century (1997), China: Air Land, and Water – Environmental Priorities for a New Millennium (2001), China Agenda for Water Sector Strategy for North China - Summary report (2002), China: Water Resources Assistance Strategy 2002, Water Issues and Options in China (2004), North China Water Quality Management Study (2005).

The Bank also has many lending and GEF projects in the sector. These include 17 ongoing projects supporting about $5 billion in water and sanitation investments and about 16 rural development projects supporting over $3 billion in irrigation and water conservation investments in all parts of China. Past and ongoing projects have funded a wide range of technical studies and enabled the Bank to establish close working relationships with key government agencies who have a critical role in policy making and implementation. These will be important assets in responding to the Government’s need to move from analysis to action.
