The scale, the biodiversity and the beauty of Thailand's marine resources, already under pressure from human activities such as industrial and tourism development, may be threatened by the changing global climate. Unusually warm seawater temperature has already led to the bleaching of coral reef-building in many parts of the world. Changing ocean chemistry can also have a serious impact on the marine ecosystems, which could weaken the structure of the coral reefs. The Impact of Climate Change of Coral Reefs in Thailand (with discussion on some of the implications for Thailand) seminar provided an opportunity for interested parties to discuss this challenge with one of the World Bank's experts on coastal zone management. Senior Environment Specialist, Marea Eleni Hatziolos, has had extensive experience in Africa, Central and Latin Americas, as well as the United States. She has worked in a number of World Bank-funded fishery and coral reef protection projects. Recently, she has worked on the study of marine and coastal resource management in Thailand, which was the topic of the World Bank's Thailand Environment Monitor in 2006.
