Welcome to the World Bank's website on environment in the East Asia and Pacific (EAP) region.
Â
The East Asia and Pacific region is home to about 2 billion people living in a rich and diverse environment which ranges widely in temperatures and precipitation levels across arid deserts, mountains with glacial systems, rugged coasts, fertile agricultural lands, and vast areas of rain forest. EAP has thousands of islands, many just a few feet above sea level, and is home to some of the most important marine resources of the world, including coral reefs, a wide range of fish species, and other biodiversity.
EAP also is experiencing rapid economic growth, which has lifted millions out of poverty over the last 15 years, and is urbanizing at the breakneck pace of 2 million people per year. This is putting stress on the environment and scarce resources. This affects the quality of people's lives, the quality of growth, and the quality of regional and global commons. By providing financial, analytical, and advisory services, the World Bank is working with client countries and development partners to address environmental challenges, protect natural resources, and introduce mitigation and adaptation solutions to respond to the challenges posed by climate change and sustain a environment friendly growth path.
This website provides information about the World Bank's activities and priorities with respect to the environmental agenda in the EAP region. If you have any questions or comments related to environment in the region, and about this website, please contact us at nqueen@worldbank.org.
