Because the H5N1 strain of avian flu is endemic in several countries in East Asia, governments are emphasizing preparedness as well as prevention to address the spread among animals and a growing number of human cases.

Vietnam, Lao PDR, Cambodia, Indonesia and China presented their integrated plans (animal and human health) at the January 2006 Pledging Conference in Beijing.

The Conference secured pledges of US$1.9 billion to enable technical agencies and developing countries meet the threat of avian and human influenza. World Bank teams have been working with health and agriculture officials as well as other donors and agencies to discuss the best ways to jointly support the country plans. 

The East Asia and Pacific region of the World Bank has continued and intensified its role in the regional response to avian flu in VietnamLao PDRCambodiaIndonesia and China.
